The Slovenian Biochemical Society

The Slovenian Biochemical Society (SBD) was established in 1983. It grew out of the Biochemical Section of the Slovenian Chemical Society, which had been active since 1972; however, the pioneering work of Slovenian scientists in biochemistry dates further back. SBD became a member of FEBS in 1992 (initially as a member of the Federation of Yugoslav Biochemical Societies).

SBD has, over the last decades, exhibited high vitality and enthusiasm that is reflected not only in ground-breaking research but also in the organization of many conferences and courses, in education in biochemistry and molecular biology, and in support for young scientists. The Society has been very active in organisation of FEBS events – among others it organized the 18th FEBS Congress in Ljubljana in 1987 and jointly with other societies three FEBS3+ Meetings in Opatija (2012), Portorož (2015) and Siofok (2018).

The mission and vision of the SBD is promotion of science and education, exchange of views and information in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as facilitation of contacts among researchers in the field, supporting applications in medicine and industry. Furthermore, SBD spreads information on achievements in biochemistry and molecular biology among the general public.

The regular activities and offers include the organization of Society biennial scientific meetings with international participation, Biomolecular days to promote science to students and the general public, and all-year-round Society lectures. SBD also provides bursaries and travel awards for junior members, financially supports organization of related scientific events in Slovenia, organizes courses and workshops, supports translation of biochemistry textbooks and regularly informs members through its website, FEBS Network and other forums. SBD also confers Lapanje awards, recognition and medals for achievements in scientific and professional activities, education and science promotion.

FEBS has twin commitments to high-quality publications and the promotion of molecular biosciences. As a charitable academic organization,
FEBS uses income from the journals to fund its diverse activities, including support for the FEBS Congress.
